Abstract

Task-ambient control systems provide personalised comfort to individuals while maintaining acceptable environmental conditions in the ambient space. Occupants can adjust their local environment settings while saving energy and reducing loads. iSPACE is a system which uses a radiantly cooled workstation table; a smart hub with task light, task fan and an array of sensors (Lux, Temperature, Rh, PIR Occupancy & CO2); and a smart power strip. This strip uses a regression based intrusive load monitoring technique to identify and control the connected loads. The occupants can monitor their energy consumption and loads through a mobile app.

During a demand response event, every individual gets a load budget. The hub controls the system in response to this budgeted load and targeted comfort levels. The occupant may adjust comfort levels (thermal/visual/plug loads) to achieve the budgeted limits. The occupant can also trade excess/deficit load with other occupants. iSPACE uses an open architecture transactive network framework to facilitate these trades.
