IIT Bombay is organizing a 1-hour side event at Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) (https://www.viennaenergyforum.org/). This is a virtual event on 7th July 2021 (Wednesday) from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. IST (10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. Vienna time). The panelists are as follows: Dr. Bas van Ruijven (IIASA, Austria), Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee (TATA Steel, India), Prof. Lars G. Nilsson (Lund University, Sweden), Dr. Dorottya Kriechbaumer (DLR Cologne, Germany). Prof. Rangan Banerjee (IIT Bombay, India) will be moderating the session. The event is titled "Towards Zero Carbon Industry Futures". The registration is now open at https://bit.ly/3fvHzjx Please note that the participation is free - however, registration is required. The industry sector accounts for a significant proportion of the global primary energy use. There are a number of possible pathways for decarbonising industry - a) Increasing energy efficiency; b) Utilizing renewables - solar, biomass, wind applications for industrial utility systems; c) Next Generation Industrial Processes; d) Carbon Capture and Utilisation; e) Recycling and Circular economy aspects. While the focus on energy transitions has been predominantly focussed on the electricity and transport sectors, there is an untapped potential for decarbonising industry's energy use patterns. Following two short presentations by IIASA (illustration of benefits of and impacts of decarbonisation scenarios) and IIT Bombay (a few examples from Indian industry on the decarbonisation measures in practice), the panelists will comment on these presentations, discuss the barriers and possible global interventions that can enable a zero carbon transition for industry and specify some recommendations for industry, researchers and governments.
