Prof. Sagar Mitra, who leads the Electrochemical Energy Laboratory at IIT Bombay, was a guest on Episode 25 of The Preetesh Singh Show, where he spoke about a persistent challenge in India’s energy storage sector: the gap between promising battery research in the lab and actual cell manufacturing on the ground.

The conversation explored what it takes to scale a material from a few grams on a bench to tonnes on a production line — including the pilot infrastructure, industry partnerships, and skilled manufacturing base needed to make that transition. Prof. Mitra framed closing this gap as central to India’s clean-energy and self-reliance ambitions.

Dr. Pratima Kumari Receives Naik and Rastogi Award for Excellence in Ph.D. Research

The Electrochemical Energy Laboratory is proud to announce that Dr. Pratima Kumari, a recent Ph.D. graduate of the group under the supervision of Prof. Sagar Mitra, has been conferred the Naik and Rastogi Award for Excellence in Ph.D. Research by IIT Bombay. The award will be presented at the Medals and Awards Presentation Ceremony during the Institute’s 64th Convocation on 22 August 2026.

This recognition adds to a strong tradition of doctoral excellence at ECEL, with several of the lab’s graduates having received best-thesis honours over the years. Dr. Kumari’s doctoral work contributed to the group’s ongoing efforts in advanced battery materials and electrochemistry.
