A Novel Control Strategy for Frequency Support From MTDC-based Offshore Wind Power Plants

Grid Integration Laboratory (GIL) at the IIT Bombay has developed a realistic and adaptive communication-less control strategy for inertial and primary frequency support from multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) connected offshore wind power plants (WPPs).

Grid integration of large-scale renewables leads to a decrease in the system inertia, resulting in a high rate of change of frequency and frequency deviations following any contingency. In this context, the proposed control scheme ensures that frequency deviation limits of the healthy neighbouring grids are not breached when frequency support is provided by the WPPs during a disturbance. The strategy is dependent only on the local measurements and can be easily customized to comply with any applicable grid code regulation.
