The ESPHy will be a unique R & D and National Resource Centre to enable Innovations and HRD in the field of Hydrogen Energy. Large scale synthesis and development of materials and systems alongwith integration, demonstration and technology transfer for various stationary and vehicular applications will be the major objective.

Bulk scalable synthesis of Mg-IM-C nanohybrids via ARB.
Mg-LaNi5-soot composite with >5 wt.% hydrogen storage in at < 1.0 bar (250C).
Mg-Mg2Ni-graphite composite with 5.7 wt.% hydrogen storage in at 1.2 bar (250C).
6.2 wt.% at 300C, 3.5 bar. 4.5 wt.% absorption in 80 sec (20 bar).
Storage of molecular hydrogen at RT and 1 bar in nanocontainers 36% enhancement in hydrogen storage capacity of Pd).

Proposed Activities

Materials

Screening and optimisation of the alloy composition to get metal hydrides with close to 5wt% capacity especially AB2 and AB5.
Characterization for study of hydrogen storage properties- capacity, thermodynamics, kinetics, thermo-physical properties, cyclability.
Study the effect of common impurities present in the Industrial grade materials in the alloy on the de/hydrogenation characteristics.
Optimization of the melting conditions for large scale synthesis of alloys.
Complex hydrides mainly boron containing compounds with high capacity, study of reversibility in single step for large scale applications.
High surface area materials including nanomaterials and nanocomposites.
Mentoring scientists in country assisting by providing technical help and materials.

System Development

Development of thermal models for predicting performance of MH based devices considering heat & mass transfer characteristics and the conditions required for specific applications.
Development of MH reactor of few hundred kg of metal hydrides.
Study of the performance of the developed system and appropriate modification.
MH based systems prototype demobnstartion for different applications.
Study of scaling up issues and demonstration of scaled up system.

Hydrogen Systems Integration and Application

Developing the complete system including BOP for different applications.
Hydrogen system integrated with fuel cell to supply back up power of 25 kWh.

Thermal energy storage of 5kW capacity
Compressor driven MH based cooling system of 5 kW capacity
Fabrication, testing and demonstration of 1kg hydrogen purification system for industrial application.
Hydrogen compressor with system capacity of 10 kg of MH and upto 200-300 bar.
