Energy Day,March 21 2009

TOPICS
This year the topics covered are,

       Renewable Energy Systems

Depleting fossil fuel reserves initiated search for non-polluting, efficient and economically competitive alternative resources. Traditional expensive silicon wafer based technology is to be substituted with cheap and efficient technology. The third generation technology devices use silicon quantum dots nanostructure to tune band gap of silicon to attain better efficiency and low cost cells. Research in alternate technologies and efficiency improvement in other renewable sources like solar thermal, nuclear and wind is progressing. The following topics will be deliberated

       Improvement in Conventional Energy Systems

Transport sector is backbone of major human activities. Efficiency improvement, modeling and alternate, non-polluting fuels to be used in engines has been a major research interest. Improvements/new thermodynamic cycles and efficient boiler models will enhance energy efficiency in its applications. The increasing global energy demand due to building has led the researchers to save energy in buildings. The energy conscious architecture has drawn importance from the government and the researchers as well. The following topics will be deliberated,

Applied Power electronics and Electrical Machines
    to Energy Systems

Integration of power electronics with renewable sources like wind, solar has initiated intense research in  those areas. The rapid developments in high power devices and signal processing in power electronics have contributed a significant reduction in cost per kW and substantial increase in the power handling capacity. Research has triggered in application of power electronics for efficient performance in illumination engineering.Static machines like transformers are highly efficient electrical equipments required throughout modern interconnected power systems. The transformer monitoring and diagnosing technique and thermal modeling of rectifier transformers have gained tremendous attention recently. Rotating machines like Switched Reluctance Motors are being used for high speed applications because of their simplicity and minimum switches in the drive circuit, however high torque motors are to be designed. The following topics will be deliberated,

     Power System and Distributed Generation

Modern large power system calls for exploration and optimization of energy sources, equipments and above all their reliability. Increasing the gap between demand and supply of the power, delay in construction and economical infeasibility of large power plants, increasing conventional fuel cost and stricter environmental regulation etc. shifted the attention of power engineers from centralized power system to the relatively new concept of Distribution Generation.
